Tung oil is a type of natural drying oil commonly used as a finish in woodworking projects. When applied to a raw surface, the oil hardens to protect and add luster to the wood. After sanding and cleaning the wood surface to remove any previous finish, spread the oil along the grain pattern using a clean, lint-free rag.

To properly finish a wooden truck bed you need to use penetrating oil. Truck beds can take a real beating from moisture. Traditional wood coatings like varnish and shellac do not penetrate the wood and can scrape off in rough use. In addition, surface coatings get scratched off and lose their protection with exposure to the sun.

Danish oil is made with linseed oil and either turpentine or mineral spirits, making it a poor choice for surfaces that will be in contact with food products. Tung oil is more water resistant than linseed oil because it has approximately three crosslinks between molecules instead of the slightly less than two for linseed oil. But because neither oil hardens well so neither can be built up thick, both are less water resistant than a built-up alkyd or polyurethane varnish, lacquer, shellac or water-based finish. I know the Behr Scandinavian #600 tung oil mixture is supposed to be excellent stuff. Yes, Tung oil can be used but if the surface is already sealed with another finish then it won’t work very well. Tung oil dries very slowly and works best when it can penetrate into the wood a bit. An alternative is a product called Watco. Watco is a Danish oil and can be rubbed on over other finishes. Watco is found at your local hardware store.
